Learning with Style Graphic Organizer

The Learning with Style Graphic Organizer (see link below) represents a way to help students organize, process, or demonstrate learning from a variety of styles. Teachers and students alike tend to enjoy working with this versatile graphic organizer design which has a way for every style to express knowledge and understanding, to show application or analyzis, or to create and evaluate. The level of student work will depend on the readiness of the student to demonstrate lower to higher levels of thinking.

There are several ways you can use this graphic organizer with students in grades 3-adult.

Organizing for learning

1. Use it as a cooperative group activity at the beginning of a unit to find out what students know.

2. Use it as an activity with partners during a unit to assess students' perceptions and misperceptions.

3. Use it as an individual activity at the end of a unit to assess students' understanding.

Making connections

1. As a style connection, each box triggers one of the five ViewPoints on Style—realistic, analytical, pragmatic, personal, divergent.

2. As a modality connection, this graphic organizer helps visual learners.

3. As a multiple intelligences connection, the graphic organizer includes visual-spatial representation and interpersonal work when completed with others.

Planning for levels of thinking

1. Use the worksheet to let students "show" their thinking about the concept and their level of sophistication.

2. Rewrite the indicators in each box to differentiate the tasks by ability level.

3. Adapt the worksheet for different content areas by tailoring the topic in each box. Just keep the intent the same.
